PSM Program Requirements

Credit Requirements

The program requires 30 credits; only 9 credits can be 400-level.

Required Courses

For required courses, 9 credits are needed from the following(courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted):

  • EE 521 – Analysis of Power Systems
  • EE 536 – Power System Economics and Electricity Markets


And one of:

  • EE 526 – High Voltage Overhead Transmission Lines
  • EE 485 – Electric Energy Distribution Systems

Elective Courses

For elective courses, 9 credits are needed from the following:

  • EE 486 – Power Electronics
  • EE 491 – Performance of Power Systems
  • EE 492 – Renewable Energy Resources
  • EE 493 – Protection of Power Systems I
  • EE 522 – High Voltage Engineering
  • EE 526 or EE 485 (above) may be taken as an elective if not used as a required course.

Up to two other relevant courses may be substituted, upon departmental approval. The policy of no more than 9 credits of 400-level courses applies to all courses appearing on your Program of Study.

Professional Core Areas

For professional core area courses, 9 credits are needed from the following(one course from each area):

  • EM 575 – Managing Innovation: Strategy and Performance

B. Managing Uncertainty, Risk, and Finance

  • EM 505 – Finance for Technical Systems
  • EM 568 – Risk Assessment and Management
  • EM 585 – Design of Experiments

C. Communications, Legal, and System Engineering Management

  • Engl 595 Communicating in STEM
  • EM 508 – Legal Concepts for Engineering and Technical Management
  • EM 565 – Introduction to Systems Management

Internship

The Professional Science Masters (PSM) in Electric Power Engineering internship is designed to give
the student the opportunity to reinforce at least one technical topic studied in your PSM program
through in-depth study of its application to their work.
