OVERVIEW
Open-source software is playing an increasingly important role in power system operations, offering flexibility, transparency, and cost advantages over traditional proprietary solutions. However, its adoption in critical infrastructure introduces a distinct set of technical, organizational, and regulatory challenges to deploy open-source solutions in operational power system environments. This presentation discusses these challenges in context of more recent IT technology developments, including SaaS, AI and increasingly complex threats to operational security of the power system.
BIO
Dr. Lackner received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2019. With over 10 years of experience in synchronized power system measurements, he focuses on advancing synchrophasor-based grid analytics and operations. He has partnered with ISO-NE and NYISO on state estimation and equipment performance monitoring initiatives and contributed to research at Sandia National Laboratories on PMU and relay communication protocols. He currently serves as COO of Grid Protection Alliance and plays an active role in shaping industry standards for synchrophasor data and grid communications. Grid Protection Alliance is a not-for-profit promoting the development and use of Open-Source Software in the electric power industry.
