Abstract: This paper proposes a supplementary controller to damp out the power and frequency oscillations of inverter-based resources (IBRs) connected to weak power grids. The proposed supplementary controller is integrated into the commonly used Proportional Integral (PI) controllers in the synchronous ref- erence frame (SRF). It does not change the conventional basic control loops and only injects two additional control commands to the basic controller loops of IBRs to improve the transient response of the controllers without affecting their regulation performances. The dynamic of phase locked loop (PLL) is con- sidered in the design of the proposed controller, which enables the proposed supplementary controller to have an effective performance in weak power grids. The proposed supplemen- tary controller is designed based on the interconnection damping assignment passivity based (IDA-PB) control strategy with the capability of injecting damping to both relative-degree-one (RD1) and higher-relative-degree (HRD) states of IBRs. The effective- ness of the proposed supplementary controller is verified using a set of time-domain simulations on a sample multisource weak power grid.
